Hills From the Door

Brecon Bunkhouse lies in a hidden valley in the Black Mountains, right on the popular walking routes for Castell Dinas and Waun Fach. Once you have arrived, you don't need the car to start walking, or to reach the local pub (bring a torch for the walk home!).

With exclusive use, the whole bunkhouse is yours: £800 for the weekend, about £14.30 per person per night for a group of 28.

Walks to Try

  • Waun Fach and Y Grib: Waun Fach (811 m) is the highest point in the Black Mountains. Walking Britain has full route details and maps for Waun Fach & Y Grib from Pengenffordd (6.5 miles, moderate) and Waun Fach from Castell Dinas (7.5 miles, moderate to hard). Both start just up the road at Pengenffordd. You'll want OS Explorer map OL13.
  • Talgarth: our nearest town was the first in the Brecon Beacons to gain 'Walkers Are Welcome' status, and hosts the annual Talgarth Walking Festival.
  • Pen y Fan: the highest peak in the National Park and in southern Britain is around 35 minutes' drive away.

After the Walk

  • Boot room for muddy boots and wet gear, so the rest of the bunkhouse stays clean.
  • Large lounge with sofas, armchairs and a wood-burning stove (logs £10 per basket, payable on site).
  • Dining room and big kitchen so the whole group can cook and eat together.
  • A full weekend: arrive any time on Friday and leave any time on Sunday evening, so there's time for a proper Sunday walk.
  • Dogs welcome: up to 2 dogs, downstairs only, at £10 per dog per night.

Good to know: think of us as a 'camping barn' rather than a holiday cottage. The bunkhouse is basic, but it's clean, with loads of space and a warm welcome. Everyone brings their own bedding (a sheet, sleeping bag or duvet, and pillow), and there are no ladders to the top bunks, so they won't suit everyone.
